Hello everyone,
Welcome to the sixth instalment of my Weekly Prompt, a series that invites you to stretch your mental muscles with micropoetry and microfiction!
Thank you to
, and for their lovely poems! This week, the theme is “From your window.” Your responses may be literal, contain the words “from my window”, focus on a specific object, location, situation, etc. In a nutshell, let your mind roam free and have fun! I will feature my favorite entries in the next Weekly Prompt post.
Rules:
Write your responses in the comment section below, in a post, or in a note. Please tag me (@haikushack) so I know you are participating.
Your pieces (poems / stories) cannot exceed 200 words.
Deadline for submissions: April 27, 2025 (11:59 p.m. ET).
What I am looking for: Meaningful and impactful work that shows instead of telling. I love writings that teach and inspire, just like a good haiku would.
What I don't want: Sexually explicit content, swear words, gory and graphic descriptions. I am okay with tasteful nudity, though.
What I prefer: Work that focuses on my poetry forms and the Flashku. However, I am happy to read other things. I love haiku!
Note: If you find this post after the deadline, you may still share your work in the comment section below. I’ll be happy to read it.
Before I go…
Submissions are open for The Haiku Shack Magazine: Issue 2. Theme: What does home mean to you? Deadline: June 30, 2025, or whenever a total of 40 accepted pieces has been reached.
I cannot wait to read you all!

THROUGH THE OPEN WINDOW
(Free Verse) by Sara Etgen-Baker
how the brightness of
today’s early sun
resembles how I feel
as it struggles to break
through the clouds.
how the sun calls on
my desire for a clear day
hoping to see the sky
turning to
gold and broadcast blue.
warm April days emerge
leaving only memories
of winter’s snow sculptures,
an artform all their own,
now gone.
their leaving ushers in a turning
of the spirit.
change is coming with the lush green
of spiky pines, rising
and rising
through the clouds.
through the open wind
my mood changes
as winter’s chilly air
sings
a new song.

Wall
Cracking wall, ivy
Rampant, tapping Elder tree
Black veiled dusty sill
Behind thread-bare well-worn chair
Creaking, screeching bough
Two dogs barking in the cold
Muse aroused again
